A Well-Stocked Jam Cupboard

It is my understanding from reading books like L.M. Mongomery's that 100 years ago one of the hallmarks of a good homemaker was a well-stocked jam cupboard. I realized the other day that the cupboard above the fridge was still totally empty, so this morning (after making another batch of plum jam) I went through my large pantry and rounded up all the jars of jam I had stuck here and there over the summer and created my "Jam Cupboard." Wow! I hadn't realized just how much jam I had made. Peach, apricot, plum, sour plum, raspberry, strawberry, blueberry, cherry, and I think there's one blackberry left from last year. Rachel Lynde would definitely approve.

She's the nosy neighbor in Anne of Green Gables, the one that Anne insults upon first meeting and has to apologize to. Years later, in the book where Anne is newly married, Rachel returns from a visit to Anne to report to Marilla that she's looked in Anne's dustbin and there wasn't anything there that shouldn't be, and her jam cupboard is well-stocked, so Rachel concedes that Anne has turned out all right after all.

That's funny! I'm going to have to read those books this year. I'll get them out of storage when I'm cleaning the shop this week and put them on my nightstand. :o)
