My Kids Can
I used to be puzzled at the way parents would say "my son can do such and such" and "my daughter did this at only a year old." Big deal, I would think, everyone does that eventually anyway.
Well, then I had kids. And you live with that baby day in and day out and they can hardly do anything for themself. One day, out of the blue, they do something new and it's like sun coming out from behind a cloud. Wow! They are going to grow and learn and become intelligent adults and not just stay drooly forever!
So I don't roll my eyes anymore when parents gush about their child doing such and such. And I'm amazed at all the new things they learn that I didn't even think about them having to learn. I knew they would learn to crawl and walk and talk, but there's so much more than that and it's so exciting to watch.
Ever since he could grab a crayon Sam has been scribbling on things. Then one day we handed him a sheet of paper and he did this:
Representational drawing! Amazing! I never would have understood before, but now I see the absolute miracle of it. What an incredible little Sam! What an amazing little mind! I don't know if most kids do this earlier or later than Sam did, but that doesn't matter. He's doing it, and it's beautiful, and I love it, and I love him.
